Strange feel – and maybe a reason why

Basingwerk Abbey on the North Wales coast just outside Holywell, a 12th century Cistercian Monastery that now lies in ruins. It was deserted with the dissolution of monasteries in 1536 under the reign of Henry VIII.

I must admit this place had, to me, no spiritual feeling at all. It was once a place of worship, monks would grind corn and use local wool and they owned land and property in Derbyshire,, but there was an earthly trapping that may have helped in its demise, money and sex! Apparently one of the Abbotts did have a number of children with different local women.

After dissolution parts of the abbey were used by some other buildings but little remains here to show of its former glory. All I can say is the grounds are pleasant to sit in and have your picnic.
