First impression?

No cheating, but I’m interested to know what your first impression of this painting is?  You may know my view if you’ve read my other blog posts, but I am interested in knowing what other people genuinely feel when they first see this painting.  Be honest please.  What do you see?

  1. Mal, I see a Mothers love for her son, but I also see her sacrificial love as she offers Him to God to be the Saviour of the world.

  2. What a disjointed painting. Mary has two skin tones and a masculine face. Whilst Jesus is almost translucent. Mary’s clothes don’t seem to match as Jesus looks to be lying across something other than her knee.
This brings me to wonder about the message that the artist is trying to deliver. Are the skin tones a message about the multiracial love of God? Is the masculine face challenging us to look at how we approach the love of one man for another? And the positioning of Christ as if on a table and not on a knee – is that emphasising that His act of self-sacrifice was/is the ultimate offering to redeem us all?
    Just saying…..
