Today we went for a run! Well, I suppose most runners would disagree with that description, but you have to start somewhere. Along the route we passed two fields. One contained a crop of barley the other a crop of potatoes. I noticed the barley field had hundreds of white butterflies, the potatoes very few. I confess that the reasons for this are a mystery to me but I have no doubt someone in the know will enlighten me. In this instance to me it clearly looked like the butterflies had chosen where to fly/rest/pollenate/ lay eggs etc. ignoring the other field. Sat back on the balcony overlooking the orange grove there are no butterflies.
As Christians we a taught to pollenate, or evangelise, wherever we happen to be. This doesn’t to me mean the in your face type of evangelism but more of the gentle living alongside people, living out a life of faith that others can see, being prepared to engage in conversation with people and answer the questions.
St Aiden started his ministry in Northumberland after being at Iona, doing exactly that. He wasn’t an in your face evangelist. He got alongside people, talked to them, found where they were with God and encouraged them to explore faith. No shouting from the rooftops but he sure made an impact in that area of the world.
