As we in England celebrate St. George (or do we), I wonder what we think of saints. According to Wikipedia saint is a term used in the Christian Church (though other religions do have their equivalent). In Christian belief, a saint is a person who is recognized as having an exceptional degree of holiness, likeness, or closeness to God.
George wasn’t English, never visited England, was born in Türkiye to a Palestinian mother and Gerontios, a Roman leader from Cappadocia in Türkiye. He wasn’t even the first patron saint of England. George was martyred around 300BC when refusing to denounce his Christian faith in the face of horrific torture, finally being beheaded. But other religions also recognise George as a great man of faith.
Do you know any saints? In my mind I meet some of the most saintly people that humanity has to offer, kind, compassionate, passionate about others and their welfare, always wanting to help, always there with a shoulder to cry on and a listening ear.
Do you know someone like this. Give thanks to God for them today and next time you talk to them, thank them in person.
Oh, and apparently, St George’s day this year (2025) is next Monday the 28th!
